In Kyrgyzstan, a pressing concern revolves around the tragic occurrence of stray dog culling. Due to the lack of resources for effective stray animal management, many residents resort to scheduled shootings as a solution which often results in inverse consequences. Our organization has a vital mission: to enlighten and empower citizens with the knowledge and tools necessary for fostering a harmonious, safe, and healthy coexistence with the canine companions that share our world. We believe that the key to addressing this issue lies in education, specifically, in highlighting the long-term advantages of sterilizing dogs. By advocating for the responsible and humane sterilization of these animals, we aim to transform the landscape and create a brighter future for both our communities and our four-legged friends.
The “Kumayik” Program, initiated by the Brigitte Bardot Foundation and the Kyrgyz-French Ecotourism Association (AFKE) in 2021, focuses on the humane and sustainable management of stray dog population in Kyrgyzstan. Its primary aim is to decrease the number of stray dogs through a systematic approach of Trap-Vaccinate-Neuter-Release (TVNR) including: capture, sterilization, rabies vaccination, identification, and subsequent release in their original habitats. Non-aggressive strays are returned to their former territories post-sterilization to maintain their protective role and preventing migration. This method has been scientifically proven to be the only effective and sustainable way to control stray dog populations. The program was inaugurated on March 1, 2022, in Kant, marking the first instance in the country of ceasing the practice of shooting dogs. Its reach later extended to neighboring villages including Luxemburg, Novopakrovka, and the Zheek region, all of which followed suit in discontinuing the shooting of dogs. As of now, the program has successfully sterilized over 20,000 dogs.
